How Much is Food in Seoul? A Real Budget Breakdown for Foreigners

After three years of living in Seoul, I've learned that eating here doesn't have to break the bank—but it also won't be as cheap as some travelers expect. Let me break down what you'll actually spend.

Street Food & Cheap Eats

If you're grabbing lunch from a pojangmacha (포장마차, street vendor cart) or convenience store, you're looking at ₩3,000–₩8,000. A kimbap (김밥, seaweed rice roll) costs around ₩4,000, tteokbokki (떡볶이, spicy rice cakes) is ₩5,000–₩7,000, and a basic gimbap set might be ₩5,500. Convenience stores like GS25 and CU have surprisingly decent meals—a kimbap triangle or deli sandwich runs ₩3,000–₩5,000.

Honestly? I grab lunch from convenience stores three times a week. It's fast, affordable, and satisfying.

Cheap Restaurant Meals

A proper restaurant meal (not fancy, but real food) typically costs ₩7,000–₩12,000. Ramyeon (라면, Korean noodles) at a small restaurant is ₩5,000–₩8,000. Jjim (찜, stewed dishes) or bokkeum (볶음, stir-fried) sets usually hover around ₩9,000–₩13,000. A basic bibimbap is ₩8,000–₩10,000.

Korean BBQ (삼겹살, samgyeopsal) is where people get sticker shock. Expect ₩15,000–₩25,000 per person at a casual spot, more at trendy places. I usually go to cheaper neighborhood spots in areas like Hongdae or Gangnam's side streets rather than the famous tourist zones.

Mid-Range & Nicer Restaurants

Dinner at a decent restaurant—not fancy, but clean with good portions—runs ₩15,000–₩30,000 per person. Chicken restaurants (닭갈비, dakgalbi or 치킨, fried chicken) fall into this range. A nice dinner with drinks? Budget ₩40,000–₩60,000.

Pizza, burgers, and Western food tend to be pricier. A decent burger is ₩12,000–₩18,000. Pizza from a local place starts at ₩15,000–₩20,000 per slice.

Delivery Apps (Helpful for Budgeting)

Use Coupang Eats, Yogiyo, or Naver Map to compare prices before ordering. Delivery fees are usually ₩2,000–₩4,000, and many restaurants offer discounts through apps. I often find 10–20% off lunch deals on Coupang Eats between 11 AM–2 PM.

Baemin (배민) is the most popular app and has tons of options. You can search by price or cuisine easily.

Groceries & Cooking at Home

Here's the real money-saver: grocery shopping. A normal supermarket trip for a week costs ₩50,000–₩80,000 for one person. I hit Emart, Lotte Mart, or Homeplus for basics. Rice, eggs, and vegetables are incredibly cheap. Chicken breast is around ₩8,000/kg.

GMarket and Kurly (마켓컬리) offer grocery delivery for ₩3,000–₩5,000, and Kurly often has next-day service. It's worth it if you don't want to carry groceries from the subway.
