The Money Reality

Hotels in central Seoul (Gangnam, Myeongdong, Hongdae) run roughly 120,000-250,000 KRW per night for decent mid-range options. A budget hotel might be 80,000 KRW, while anything fancy hits 300,000+ KRW easily.

Airbnbs are more scattered. A small studio in Hongdae goes for about 60,000-120,000 KRW per night, while a nicer one-bedroom in Gangnam could be 150,000-200,000 KRW. The catch? You'll often see Airbnb's "service fee" (platform fee) at 15-20%, which eats into that savings.

Airbnb Wins If You...

Stay longer than 3 nights. Many hosts offer discounts for weekly stays, making Airbnb genuinely cheaper. You also get kitchen access—huge if you're tired of eating out (and your wallet will thank you).

Want a neighborhood vibe. Staying in Ikseon-dong or Seongsu instead of Myeongdong feels like actually living here, not just visiting. You'll discover local cafes and restaurants your hotel-staying friends miss.

Need more space. A one-bedroom Airbnb with a washing machine beats a cramped hotel room for the same price.

Travel with a group. Split a two-bedroom apartment between four people, and suddenly you're paying 30,000-50,000 KRW per person per night.

But Airbnb Frustrates Me When...

Communication fails. I've had hosts who only respond through Airbnb's app (앱), and when you need a key at 11 PM on a Saturday, it sucks. Hotels have 24-hour front desks.

The listing photos lie. Natural lighting in pictures versus Seoul's actual winter gloom is real. Some "cozy studios" are actually shoebox apartments.

Wifi is questionable. Korea's internet is famously fast, but not every Airbnb has good coverage. I once stayed in Hongdae where the router was in the host's locked bedroom.

You need an Alien Registration Card (외국인등록증). Hotels don't ask. Airbnb hosts sometimes get nervous about foreigners and request it, which feels invasive for a short stay.

Stay just 1-2 nights. The booking hassle and Airbnb service fees make hotels more convenient.

Want zero stress. A hotel is predictable. You know exactly what you're getting. No surprises about cleanliness or wifi.

Need real customer service. Hotel staff speak English better, there's 24-hour front desk support, and if something breaks, they fix it immediately.

Travel in winter or summer. Airbnbs in older buildings can have sketchy heating (난방) or no air conditioning (에어컨). Hotels have reliable climate control.

My Honest Recommendation

For tourist friends (3-5 days): Hotel in Myeongdong or Gangnam. Pay the extra money for peace of mind and convenience.

For longer stays (1-3 weeks): Airbnb in Hongdae, Ikseon-dong, or Seongsu. You'll save money and actually feel like you're experiencing Seoul rather than visiting it.

For a month+: Honestly, neither. Look into Airbnb monthly rates or consider a short-term jeonse (전세) or wolse (월세) rental. You'll get better prices.
