Seoul Han River Activities: Your Complete Guide for Foreigners
Seoul Han River Activities: Your Complete Guide
After three years here, I can honestly say the Han River (한강, Hangang) has become my favorite escape from Seoul's hustle. It's where foreigners and locals alike go to chill, and once you know what's actually worth doing, it's incredibly easy to access. Let me share what I've learned.
Cycling Along the River
This is hands-down the most popular activity, and for good reason. The Han River has about 62km of dedicated cycling paths that are smooth, safe, and absolutely packed on weekends.
Where to rent: There are dozens of rental shops near every major park entrance. I usually go to Ttareungi (타거은기), Seoul's public bike system — grab a bike from any station using the Ttareungi app or website. First hour is 2,000 KRW, then 1,000 KRW per additional hour. Much cheaper than private rentals.
Pro tip: Rent early morning (7-8am) to avoid crowds and enjoy the river before tour buses arrive. Start at Yeouido Park (여의도 공원) — it's central, well-maintained, and has great stops for coffee and food.
Picnicking Like a Local
Picnicking isn't just a thing here; it's practically a religion. Koreans come prepared with actual tables, chairs, and full meals. You don't need to go that hard, but do bring snacks.
Best spots:
- Hangang Park Jamsil (한강공원 잠실): Most crowded but has the best facilities, shaded areas, and bathrooms
- Hangang Park Yeouido: Quieter, better for sunset photos
- Hangang Park Sangbong: North of the river, fewer tourists, more local vibes
Bring a picnic blanket (노래방 can get expensive; Daiso has cheap ones for 3,000-5,000 KRW), grab kimbap (김밥) from GS25 or CU for 5,000-7,000 KRW, and settle in for a few hours.
Night Cruises & River Walks
For something more romantic or just different, Han River cruises (한강 유람선) leave from several docks. The sunset cruise (약 1시간) costs around 15,000-20,000 KRW and leaves every 30 minutes during summer. Book on Naver or call ahead — some are seasonal.
The night walk along Yeouido Park to Mapo Bridge is free and underrated. The lit-up bridges reflect beautifully in the water, and it's peaceful despite being central.
Sports & Recreation
If you're more active, the Han River has dedicated areas for:
- Running/jogging: Almost entire path is runner-friendly
- Inline skating: There's a flat section near Hangang Park Jamsil perfect for beginners
- Paddleboarding & kayaking: Try Hanriver SUP (한강 SUP) near Jamsil — about 40,000-50,000 KRW per hour. Book via their Instagram or call ahead
- Swimming: There are designated swimming areas open July-August. Jamsil area has lifeguards and facilities. Usually free but watch for announcements.
Riverside Cafes & Chicken
Here's what most tourists miss: the Han River chicken restaurants (닭 restaurant). Order delivery through Naver or Coupang Eats and eat right on the river. A whole grilled chicken (통닭구이) costs 15,000-20,000 KRW. Search "한강 치킨" on Coupang Eats, and you'll see dozens of options.
