Why Rent Hanbok at Gyeongbokgung?

Gyeongbokgung (경복궁) is the largest and most impressive of Seoul's five royal palaces. The photos you get in hanbok here are absolutely incredible—the architecture, the gardens, the traditional gates. Basic hanbok: 15,000-25,000 KRW for 4-6 hours

Premium hanbok (better quality, more colors): 30,000-50,000 KRW

Full day rental (8+ hours): 40,000-60,000 KRW

Hair and makeup add-on: 10,000-15,000 KRW (optional but worth it)

My Honest Tips

Pick your color wisely. Everyone and their cousin is wearing pink or pastel blue. If you want Instagram photos that don't look identical to 10,000 others, go for deeper colors—burgundy, forest green, or navy. Trust me on this.

Go early. Weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday, 10-11am) have way fewer tourists. The palace feels more peaceful, and your photos will have less crowd chaos. Weekends? Absolutely packed with people doing the exact same photoshoot.

Wear comfortable shoes underneath. You'll be walking around for hours. The hanbok skirt (치마) is full enough that nobody sees your feet anyway. I always wear clean white socks and comfortable sneakers.

Bring a small bag. Most rental shops give you a tiny handbag (보자기), but it fits basically nothing. Bring a crossbody bag you don't mind being visible, or just carry your phone and ID.

Check the rental time carefully. Most shops count rental hours from when you leave the shop, not from when you pick up. If you want 4 hours, that means 4 hours of actual wearing time, not including fitting and photo time.

The Experience Itself

Plan for at least 2-3 hours at the palace. Wear your hanbok for photos at the main gates, the courtyard, and along the pathways—the lighting changes throughout the day, so different spots look better at different times. Golden hour (sunset) is absolutely stunning.

Pro tip: Most foreigners stick to the main palace buildings, but walk around the back gardens (후원 area, if accessible that day). You'll find way better photo spots with fewer people.

Quick Personal Recommendation

Honestly? Do it on a weekday afternoon if you can swing it. The experience is so much better when you're not fighting through crowds. And yes, spend the extra 10,000 KRW on hair and makeup—it completes the whole look and makes photos feel more authentic.
