Best Weekend Getaways from Seoul: Where to Go When You Need a Break

After three years in Seoul, I've learned that sometimes you just need to escape the concrete jungle. The good news? You don't need to go far. Here are my honest favorite weekend getaways that actually feel worth the trip.

Busan (부산) — The Beach Classic

Distance: 2.5-3 hours by KTX train
Cost: KRW 59,000-79,000 round trip (book on Korail.com or Naver Train)

Busan is the obvious choice, but there's a reason everyone goes. Hit Haeundae Beach (해운대해변) on Saturday morning before it gets packed, grab fresh sashimi at Jagalchi Fish Market (자갈치시장) — expect to pay KRW 15,000-30,000 per plate — and explore Gamcheon Culture Village (감천문화마을) for Instagram-worthy views. Stay in Haeundae or Seomyeon (서면) for nightlife. Budget around KRW 100,000-150,000 for a decent guesthouse.

Pro tip: Take the KTX (not the slower train) — it's worth the extra cost to maximize your time.

Nami Island (남이섬) — Peaceful and Picturesque

Distance: 1 hour from Seoul
Cost: KRW 16,000 admission (or included in combo passes)

This tree-lined island is perfect if you want nature without the hiking. Rent a bike (KRW 8,000-10,000), walk around, grab coffee at one of the many cafes (KRW 5,000-8,000), and actually relax. The ferry ride itself (KRW 5,500) is weirdly therapeutic. Go on a weekday if possible — weekends get touristy fast.

Jeonju (전주) — K-Drama Vibes and Street Food

Distance: 3 hours by bus or KTX
Cost: KRW 25,000-35,000 bus fare (book on Naver Bus)

If you want culture without trying too hard, Jeonju's Hanok Village (한옥마을) is stunning. Rent a hanbok (한복) for KRW 10,000-15,000 and wander around like you're in a drama. The food scene is incredible — try bibimbap (비빔밥) at a local restaurant for KRW 8,000-12,000, or hunt down the famous hotteok (호떡) stands. Stay at a traditional guesthouse (minbak, 민박) for KRW 80,000-120,000.

Gangneung (강릉) — Beach + Mountains Combo

Distance: 3.5 hours by KTX
Cost: KRW 38,000-50,000 train fare

My recent favorite. Gyeongpo Beach (경포해변) is less crowded than Busan, the coffee culture is genuinely excellent (try the cafes along the beachfront), and you can actually hike Seoraksan (설악산) nearby if you're feeling ambitious. Grab fresh squid (ojingeochae, 오징어채) at the night market for KRW 8,000-15,000. Guesthouses run KRW 70,000-110,000.

Gapyeong (가평) — Easy Escape for Non-Hikers

Distance: 1 hour by bus
Cost: KRW 4,500 bus fare

Perfect for a quick Saturday escape. There's Nami Island again (different vibe from this side), cute cafes everywhere, and zero pressure. You can do this as a day trip from Seoul.
